Cinderella and retail !

Cinderella and retail

Cinderella and retail

We all know the story of Cinderella, its an inspiring and heartwarming story. But any idealised version of what we should do, doesn’t really come close to how it really is, or even how it might evolve as time goes on.

To continue the Cinderella analogy, we all want to find our Prince Charming, and put on the beautiful glass slipper and live the fairy tale. We all want the love story !

But idealised love and real love are not the same thing, just as the idea of having a shop and the reality of having a shop are not the same thing.

Falling in love is easy, putting on the glass slipper is easy, but being in love is harder and making it work day after day, year after year is much harder. Sustaining the dream is the difficult part.

Getting the keys to your first shop is usually surprisingly easy, fitting it out and choosing the products is exciting, but it’s just the beginning, not the end.

Getting a shop is the easy part, like putting on the glass slipper. The rest takes hard work – hard work to sustain the enthusiasm, motivate the staff, check on the competition, find new and exciting products, keep up to date on new trends and market your business.

Just like the Cinderella story, someone missed out on telling us that life can be unfair, big local businesses can close, town centres can evolve, and not in a good way, competition can open up next door, and economies don’t always work in your favour.

So, what are we to do ? The only option is to choose it the way it is…. After all it isn’t any different to how it is. Then go to work on making it the way we’d like it to be and that’s a serious business decision.

True love is not a temporary thing, it comes with time, it’s not a Cinderella story. It’s a story of commitment, and doing the little things well, with a light heart, not because you have to do them, because you want to do them.

Naturally it’s the same for owning a shop and running a shop. Most of the hard work is behind the scenes, but its vital, and its vital that you maintain your passion for your business, because when the passion starts to fade it’s obvious to everyone……

Happiness is a buffet dinner…!

Happiness is a buffet dinner...!

Happiness is a buffet dinner...!

Happiness is a fleeting and inexact thing, but we all know when we have it, or when we feel it, even if its hard to put into words. But what is happiness and why are we talking about it in a business blog?

Achieving your own happiness is the best measure of how well you are living your life and enjoying your relationships. You can learn how to be happier and more fulfilled in everything you do and the end result of this is that everything around you will work more smoothly. It all begins and ends with us !

We’re all different…

Happiness in life is rather like a buffet at a really good hotel. If 100 people went up to the buffet and chose the food they wanted to eat in the quantity and mix that they felt would be most pleasing to them, then every plate would be different. A husband and wife going up to the buffet would each come back with plates that looked completely different. Happiness is the same.

Each of us needs a particular combination of ingredients to feel the very best that we can about ourselves.

Continuing with my buffet analogy, consider that each meal time when you visit it you’ll be selecting different food, or maybe you’ll be the person who has the same meal day in and day out without getting bored of it? But if you do try different food, then you’ll see that what you want changes by the meal, if not by the day….. so in the same vein, what we want to make us happy can change daily……

So why are we having a discourse on happiness in a business blog? Its because we’re all human beings and its all inter-related. We don’t act as automatons and if we are at least vaguely aware of what makes us happy then we have more chance of keeping ourselves on track instead of wondering off into the ether and making decisions that are not going to ultimately make us happy…

Sometimes its deciding to be bigger, open a new shop, take on more staff, and sometimes its deciding to be smaller or take on a new project, its completely individual and it changes – so we need to have some kind of a plan to make sure we’re in tune with ourselves and not just in a mad rat race that we don’t really want to win anyway….

What’s on your plate right now ?

Being overwhelmed is over-rated !

Overwhelmed is over-rated !

Overwhelmed is over-rated !

In our mad crazy world there’s a certain kudos in being stressed or overwhelmed by what you have to do. Its like a battle cry as we try to out stress each other by what’s on our to do list…

But being overwhelmed and stressed is over-rated – put plainly its just not good for you ! Ladies its aging, and guys – well, yes its aging for you too, but guys generally age better so lets not dwell on that little mystery.

When you start to feel stressed its because you’ve started to think that you’re going to fail ! Pure and simple – somewhere in your head you’ve started to think that you’re not going to make it, you can’t get it all done, and that’s causing you stress and flooding your body with adrenaline – which is soooooo not good for you it’d take a separate blog post to thrash that one out !

So what can you do?

Here’s three possible actions you can take…

1. Break it down

Question : how do you eat an elephant?
Answer : bite by bite

Break whatever you’re trying to do down into small manageable steps, so you can feel that you’re moving closer to your goal and achieving something.

2. Give yourself more time:

Can you re-negotiate a deadline, you’ll do much better with this if you’re not consistently doing this… but its worth asking…. At least you’ll be able to separate out your to do list into immediate, urgent and needs to be done, but not necessarily today

3. Discuss it, diarise it, delegate it, or delete it…!

Discussing things can be really helpful when you’re not thinking so clearly – just make sure you’re picking someone smart to discuss it with – someone who can sound it out and pick their way through the threads of what you’re saying

Diarise it – if it doesn’t have to be done today – then diarise it, and forget about it, concentrating on what absolutely has to be done today. I know its not ideal, but sometimes you’ve just got to let go of perfection and accept that there was only one superman, and you’re not him !

Delegate it – get some help, enrol people in helping you…. Explain what needs to be done and why and get everyone involved. A problem shared is a problem halved.

Delete it – oooh, harsh I know – but is it going to make any difference to your life….? Really ? if it’s not, and it’s a pile of stuff that you’ve been meaning to read for weeks, that’s blocking up your desk – just admit that you’re not going to do it, sweep it into the bin, and see if the world doesn’t begin on time the next day – it will I can promise you.

If you’re really stressing over something, a deadline, or a customer, or a call you have to make, then the best thing to do, is to change your state – if you’re sitting, then stand, if you’re standing then lie down, if you’re at a desk, then go for a walk round the block.

Get your body moving – for some reason it helps, go outside, look at the sky and see how big it is and how small we are, and how much it really really really doesn’t matter.

Deep breaths everyone !

So what does a brand ambassador need to be successful ?

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

Find your voice...

Find your voice...

When we think of brand ambassadors we tend to think of rich, successful celebrities getting paid to endorse big name brands. But that’s such a narrow definition – What if you’re a cool skate store, then how about talking to the local skaters, finding the best local one and helping him or her out – ie before they become too big to be interested in you ?

Or how about approaching a local band, and offering to kit them out, or supply their jewellery, in return for them talking about it, blogging about it, you can see where I’m going with this…..

If your business is babies clothes, then how about finding a new mum who’s well connected, loves giving coffee mornings and offering her a few products to “road test” for you – this works for both of you as each of you get some positioning with this model of working, it’s a win win, or as close to it as we can get !

So what qualities does a brand ambassador need to be able to talk about your company and to share their belief and influence others?

The number one ingredient in this cake is passion !

Pure and simple, they need to love your brand, what you aspire to, what you’re trying to create – in short to buy into your vision for the future.

You could be feeling a bit frazzled at the idea of trying to build a circle of brand ambassadors for your business…. But its really not as difficult as you may think

Consider that you’ve already got the basics down, you have the store, product or service, the vision, the USP, and you know where you want to go…

So the next step is sharing this with those around you – you may think that they arlready know all this about you, but I bet you’ll be surprised to find that most don’t. Either you’ve been backward about coming forward, or they haven’t been listening because they either didn’t buy into it, or couldn’t see what’s in it for them ?

So, make sure your employees, friends & family are motivated to help you spread the word, tell them your story, your hopes, your plans and how you’re going to do it….

Remember” the world makes way for the man who knows where he’s going !”

Talk to customers who are thrilled with your service or product, ask for a testimonial, add it to your website and marketing materials and make sure that you spread success stories !

Celebrity brand building through ambassadorship works to build brand loyalty as the celebrity involved has some kudos, or a level of respect and trust that entices consumers to follow his or her choice.

But our world is changing so fast today, that celebrity brand building can include online social media, it could include influential bloggers or Twitterers with large followings, and there’s no reason on earth that you can’t be a successful brand ambassador for your own business.

In fact, its essential !

Brand ambassadors and representing your brand !

Who are your brand ambassadors...?

Who are your brand ambassadors...?

A brand is essentially your business’s product or service combined with your unique positioning, basically how you do what you do. All brands stand for something in the consumers eyes, and what your brand stands for is vitally important for the success of your business.

Many of the top brands have brand ambassadors who promote them (for a fee of course) so Beyonce, our star above represents Samsung and Armani among others, while Keira Knightley is the brand ambassador for Chanel, and Jessica Biel for Revlon, to name a few, just to get you in the mood for the blog…

Just to clarify what we’re talking about exactly here – “A brand ambassador is a a well-connected person or a celebrity who is used to promote and advertise a product or service”

Whilst this is clearly true, I’ve been thinking lately that there’d be value in thinking of ourselves as brand ambassadors for our ownbusinesses. The following definition is more inclusive “ a brand ambassador is a representative of an organisation that best portrays the product, service qnd passion of the organisation “

Maybe we don’t all have Beyonce on speed dial, but if you consider the definition of a brand ambassador above, then the scope of your brands ambassadors becomes much larger and spreads and morphs into a variety of audiences, many with the potential to influence others.

Clearly all employees are ambassadors for your shop, if they are saying good things about you and your shop to their network of friends and family, this can bring new customers through the door.

Your customers can be ambassadors for your business if they like what you do and what you stand for. Seth Godin called this the era of conversation marketing, so if your customers like what you do, you’ve pretty much lit the blue touch paper, so you’d do well to stand well back and let them get on with the business of promoting you themselves.

Certain people are just more socially aware, better connected and better at connecting with other people, these are called “influencers” and if you have a customer who’s an influencer who loves your business, you can expect sales to increase because of this connection, in some ways its more like patronage, an old fashioned term, but well used in this context.

Consider that you’re the best ambassador for your brand, as Pierce Brosnan isn’t currently available, we all have to work with what we’ve got !

The key motivation of a brand ambassador is passion (notwithstanding the motivating factor of money of course ) – and as its your business if anyone is passionate about it, then you’re the best person to showcase this trait successfully.

Take a second to work out, or maybe remember, what you’re most passionate about in your business if you’ve never considered this angle before…

Is it the sense of community you love?
Living your dream ?
Empowering others ?
Selling beautiful aspirational things?
Selling everyday useful things?
Providing a service?
Being in the middle of things?
Sourcing amazing products for your shop?
Or something entirely different ?

What’s your passion?

How can you tell everyone about it ?

What’s your signature…?

Friday, May 15th, 2009

What's your signature...?

What's your signature...?

Every job bears the signature of the person that did it !

Oooh a scary thought this one ! When you come to think about it, every job you do bears your signature…. whether its emptying the bins, putting descriptions to images on your website, or employing people.

So, the real question behind this one, is do you think other people notice what you do and how you do it? The answer is of course, nine times out of ten a resounding yes !

If you gossip about customers behind their backs
If you don’t pay attention to what people are saying
If you argue with a customer instead of delighting them
If you hide behind email
If you blur the truth a little
If you network to get not to give
If you do as little as you can get away with…

Then the customers already know who you are, because what you say is only 20% of the picture, what you do is the other 80%.

Its easy to say stuff, not so easy to do stuff…… but its what you do that makes you who you are……

What’s your signature ?

What’re your staff’s signatures like?

What’s your shop signature ?

The harder i work, the luckier i get…!

Make your luck

Make your luck

The harder i work, the luckier i get !

Actually while an element of luck does play a part in all of our lives, i think the element that continually gets a bad press is pure plain and not so sexy hard work.

I love quotes about success, they are so apt - “success is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration” for example. You can’t argue with it, its just true and said far more succinctly than i could ever hope to.

So, why the nations fascination with the quick fix, the lottery win, the celebrity show? Is working hard and getting on with it, so unsexy? Behind any seemingly glamorous job is a large quantity of deeply dull stuff to do. Even rock stars get fed up with the touring, lots of sitting on a bus for 2 hours of show - based on hours its not so appealing.

I think the answer is not to aspire to the lucky shot thats going to change it all for you, the winning ticket, or the talent spotter (unless you really do have talent of course) I think you build your own luck and you build your own life….

The problem with running after a dream is that its illlusory, and until you get it you won’t know whether it will make you happy - chances are it won’t - if you win money it doesn’t necessarily make you happy, you just arrive at your problems with more style, and in better clothes…

Success is about giving not getting, giving a great service, creating a great customer list, getting noticed for your fabulous window displays, getting talked about for all the right reasons, and it takes work.

if you want to be talked about for your fabulous window displays for example, then you’ve got to educate yourself on window displays - so you know whats a good one, whats a bad one and how to create one, using depth, colour, repetition, style, season, fashion and a myriad other eventualities….

In other words you have to work at it - you have to work at anything you want to be good at. No short cuts, no quick fixes, no knight on a white horse coming to save you or me.

Jim Rohn, famously said “Don’t wish it was easier - Wish you were better ! ”

Work out what you need to do, be, learn or have in order to be better and work on doing, being, learning or having that - and you’ll get better.

Simple - no quick fixes though !

Still not twittering…?

Still not twittering...?

Still not twittering...?

Twitter, (and other social media are doing) are changing all the rules of advertising and marketing. This is going on under our noses, and we’re now in the era of conversational marketing. You hadn’t noticed ? Prepare yourself because this is a huge shift in the way things work, and the implications are massive for all of us !

The internet and social media have changed the way we discuss corporate brands and reputations. Yelp allows us to rate and review local businesses we frequent, Facebook allows us to connect with friends and family and share our interests and our shoe addictions, and Twitter is the destination for any shred of emotion we want to share with our network !

Consumers are figuring out that they get better information and support from being networked to each other than to companies. In short they turn to each other for advice.

The good news for businesses is that we are apparently allowed into their conversations. More and more companies are building MySpace pages, launching facebook profiles or setting up Twitter accounts for customer support. They are finding that the corporate voice of “we have something to tell you” doesn’t work on these mediums, instead a new conversational marketing language is what works on the new media.

A recent survey of Twitterers, asked about their top reasons for using the platform stated the top two as:

• I find it exciting to learn new things from people
• I value getting information in a timely manner

Having lots of people follow them was not a high priority for them.

So, from a consumer’s viewpoint, the new social media redress the balance between consumer and faceless large company, or even faceless small company. Retailers are using Twitter to engage with customers, both for customer service issues and to get feedback and dialogue with customers – almost a market research perspective. Not, interestingly enough – for selling, or at least not exclusively.

Seth Godin, the world famous marketer said that marketing is the act of telling stories about the things we make, do or create – stories that sell and more importantly today perhaps in our virtual world – stories that spread !

From a business or marketers perspective, engaging in Twitter allows you to be in the loop and also to hear what is being said about you and your brand, which gives you an opportunity either to learn from what you hear or to respond. If someone was bad mouthing your business wouldn’t you want to be able to defend yourself?

Aside from information and protecting a brand, Twitter also allows you to build a following that you can tweet to - letting them know about your business, your personality and what you have going on…. for free - in effect its free advertising, all it costs is your time and you can join the conversation !

If you are finding your tweets a bit much to handle, check out tweet deck, it’ll manage them for you and enable you to keep chirruping !

What does success look like or feel like…?

What does success look like or feel like?

What does success look like or feel like?

A quick whizz round all of us has revealed that we all have very different views of what success is…? For some success is a fast car, a hot girl and a lot of money. For others its achieving a goal and creating something, while for others its time for bubble baths !

Even more illuminating are the answers to the question “Are you successful ?” or “Do you consider yourself to be successful ?”

People answer this question from an entirely subjective viewpoint, whether they actually feel that they are successful, this is irrespective of their financial, emotional or work situation, and the answers are surprising !

I asked a good friend of mine this question “Do you think you are successful ? ” His answer was a resounding YES ! Not a seconds hesitation, clear and precise.

I asked him what did he judge it upon to be able to answer so immediately a question that has me pondering the answer ?

His reply - ” I keep trying ! ”

It blew me away !

If this was my criteria for success, then i’d definately be a raging success !

But its not my criteria !

Upon reflection, my criteria are all about how in control of things i am, this can be anything from business to relationships, gardening to laundry.

Obviously the times i can actually be in control of those things are few and far between. To add a bit of spice to it, for myself and make it a bit more difficult, i also see a successful person as someone who’s never flustered and has a fully functioning filofax with neat writing in it !

Yes, feel free to laugh any time you like ! My standards are clearly ridiculous - but i didn’t know that until i actually realised i had some standards.

So, my question to you today is : ” Are you successful ?” and how are you judging your decision?

The answers to the question just might give you some food for thought …!
