Trademark your business

Trademark your business

Trademarks are an important way to protect your business name, logo or style.

A trademark is a symbol or logo that distinguishes a product or service. The British Intellectual Property office deals with about 28,000 trademark applications a year.

Trademarks are believed to have originated from bakers around the middle ages. Once the bread was made, but before it was cooked it was stamped with a seal that identified the baker, so that he could be punished if the bread was not good or underweight, but if the bread was of a consistently high standard, he would generate a lot of goodwill towards his bakery.

Today a trademark can be a name such as Coke, or a symbol such as McDonalds famous Golden arches, or it could be a combination of the two - it can even protect a shape or a particularly distinctive colour.

For consumers trademarks allow them to make informed decisions about which products to buy, because different trademarks are associated with different qualities in a product. For instance a product from Volvo would be associated with the term “safety” in most consumers minds.

If you have an unusual store name or business idea its a good idea to look into trademarking it. This costs around £200 and takes approximately a month to process at the patent office’s headquarters in Cardiff. The office also have a fast track process for £85 that allows you to see if your mark is eligible or likely to infringe upon another previous mark.

Bear in mind when searching that trademarks are allocated per classification, so that for example working in steel would be a different classification to use in the gift trade.

You can search online for free for other similar businesses and logo’s to see if yours would be eligible for a trademark. A trademark is a valuable business asset and help with a positive business evaluation.

Once you have a trademark you can use the registered trademark logo, which effectively deters others from using your trademark and generating business from the goodwill you have developed in the running of your business.

The four D’s - overcoming procrastination.

The four D's

The four D's

Procrastination is a life sucker – you know what you should be doing but you find a gazillion reasons to be doing something else, all the while at the back of your mind is the nagging voice telling you that you really should be doing whatever it was you are putting off !

In the last post we looked at the five “personality types” for procrastination. So I’m sure you found yourself among them, but now that we know why we do it, what can we do about it ?

Here are some things you can do:

1. Recognise when you are doing this and make a commitment to monitor this trait and NOT do this anymore.

2. Put a big sticky note in front of your face at your desk or shopcounter if you have to but stop it. It’s not doing you any good.

3. Look at the benefits you get from doing it, there’s always a pay off for our actions, even if its not immediately visible.

4. Stop excusing procrastination from those around you

5. Develop a personal commitment to action

6. Prioritize your life – have you taken too much on, are you excited by the opportunities or lost in a blizzard of “To do’s”

If you’re looking for a way to work out what you should be doing, the four D’s are a good guide. Do it, Diarise it, Delegate it or Dump it !

You can use this little mantra as you open post, work out who’s supposed to be doing what, or just for all those jobs on a list somewhere that you just know you’re never going to do – whether it be learn French, take a mechanics course or clear out the storage shed.

If you know at the back of your mind that you’re not going to do it, but you put it on the list because you think you should – Give yourself a break and take it off ! Admit its never going to happen, and put your energy into something that you do really want to do !

If you go through your list, there should be things that can be delegated – Ok, not all for sure, but some, and it’ll give your staff a chance to learn new things, and free up some time for you to learn some new skills for all those things that are on the list that you really don’t know how to do….

Or hire someone who does know how to do them, loves doing them and lets you concentrate on the things you’re good at, instead of slogging away at the stuff you hate…

That’s a winning strategy !

Procrastination !

Procrastination !

Procrastination ! Even the word is long…! Dragged out, lots of syllables…!

The Definition of Procrastination is:

The failure to do what needs to be done when it needs to be done.

Procrastination affects us all at different times and for different reasons. But the end result is that is sucks our energy and leaves us feeling listless. We know what we should be doing, but we do something else instead, or we do nothing instead, but at the back of our minds, we still know that we’re cheating ourselves…!

There’s 5 causes or personality types in Procrastination:

1.Perfectionist - Someone who has to have everything ‘perfect’ before starting the new thing, implementing their new idea or launching a new store, product or service.

2.Dreamer - Someone who lives in their big vision and doesn’t do too much about the little details.

3.Crisis Maker - Someone who likes to create drama in their lives or wait until the very last minute to do a certain task or who works well under pressure

4.Defy-er - Someone who doesn’t like to do things by the rules, a bit of a rogue agent

5.Over-doer - Someone who does things over and over again without actually taking action or implementing something – rather like an over-analyser or over planner.

Do you recognise yourself in there ? I’m definitely a number one, I’m the type that has to clean the desk and sharpen all the pencils before I can return a phone call ! Yes, feel free to shake your head, as it is mystifying to all around me too !

So why do we do it?

• Is it because we’re lazy?

• Is it because we aren’t sure what we should do to go forward?

• Is it because deep down, we’re not totally confident that we can accomplish the task?

• Is it because we don’t enjoy the task and there are other more fun things to do instead?

• Is it because it’s a “should” on our list, but not something that we actually want to do ?

The answer is of course a mixture of the above…

Sorry there’s no one stop panacea for procrastination, but if you look through your unfinished “to do list” you’ll be able to figure out what the blockages are for you ! (more about this on Wednesday )

The definition of insanity…

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

Einstein said it best !

Einstein said it best !

I believe it was Einstein who came up with this oft repeated quote although i’ve seen it attributed to others too. Basically, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result !

How often in life do we do this ? I don’t have enough fingers and toes to even begin to count the number of times i’ve fallen foul of this truism.

If you find yourself negotiating with your staff, bemoaning your sales figures, despairing at the market, or putting the same advert in the same magazine month upon month(without testing it) then you’ve surely strayed down this route.

The clever thing to do (apparently) is to pick yourself up, dust yourself off and have a look at what you could do differently?

Implement a personal development meeting with each of your staff ?

Try a new sales avenue - take the product to the customer rather than waiting for them to come to you ?

Look at all the businesses that are surviving and thriving in our current economy?

Teach yourself the basic rules for PR so you can be the story instead of the advertising supporting the story ?

If any of these would be doing something differently to how you normally do it, then they’re worth a try.

What else could you come up with thats totally different to how you normally do things ?

Heck, if it ain’t broke then don’t fix it, but if you find yourself going home to your spouse or long suffering partner and complaining about the same things more than once a week, then its probably time for a change, before you drive yourself, or maybe them, quietly insane.

It might even be fun to do something differently. What five things in your store or the running of your store drive you crazy ?

Have a quick brainstorm with anyone who’ll listen about what you could do about them, don’t rely on partners and staff, involve the milkman, people down the pub, your hairdresser, anyone who might have a different view point to you -after all your way hasn’t been working so well, so maybe its time for a new approach ?

What have you got to lose ?

Adriaaaaaaaaaaaaan ……!

Don't give up....

Don't give up....

I love Rocky Balboa ! I admit it.

Not the last movies but the earliest ones, where he’s young and hungry and the iconic moment when he shouts Adriaaaaaaan ! Ah, iconic cinema moments (and I’m a girl !)

So what do I love about Rocky? Simple, he doesn’t give up – He’s a survivor, and he keeps pushing through when all the odds are against him, but he’s totally determined and victory is sweeter because everything was against him !

Is there a bigger icon of triumph over adversity ?  I don’t think so !

So many times in life we get kicked in the bum and its hard to pick ourselves up time after time and remember what we started the damn business for in the first place…..?

To be our own bosses ….

To sell beautiful things we love ….

To set our own hours ….

To create something ….

Whatever your reason was, come Monday mornings it’s sometimes hard to hold onto the dream, so this is for everyone that doesn’t give in, that keeps pushing, learning new stuff when they feel a hundred years old, sorting out staff dilemmas and schedules, finding new suppliers, creating new displays and generally motivating everyone around them and keeping the spark alive.

Lets celebrate that we’re all still here !

Its enough of a reason, we don’t need fireworks and a band, lets just acknowledge that we’re fighters (maybe not as fierce as Rocky) but with the same determination !

Admit it now, how many of you have got “eye of the tiger” on your gym i-pod mix… I thought so !

In case you’re in need of a little pick me up this Monday morning… here’s the words to Eye of the Tiger to get you in the mood for a totally kicking week !

Risin’ up, back on the street
Did my time, took my chances
Went the distance, now I’m back on my feet
Just a man and his will to survive

So many times, it happens too fast
You change your passion for glory
Don’t lose your grip on the dreams of the past
You must fight just to keep them alive

It’s the eye of the tiger, it’s the cream of the fight
Risin’ up to the challenge of our rival
And the last known survivor stalks his prey in the night
And he’s watchin’ us all in the eye of the tiger

Survivor, Eye of the Tiger

Get networking

Its good to talk

Its good to talk

Where do people in your target audience hang out locally?

Why not go there and meet them, chat to them and chat them up (not in that way !) but just join in what they’re doing - not in a creepy, I’m following you kinda way, more in a we live in the same community kinda way.

As we get older and more set in our ways its easier to shrink a bit, not join in, make excuses for why we don’t do things, its rather like building up muscle - either we use it or we lose it. The sad fact is that the less new things we try, the less new people we meet, with the obvious consequence - the smaller our lives get.

Networking has a myriad array of connotations for people, some see it as a group thing or as rather false, but like anything in life, you get out of it what you put into it.

After all you’re talking about something you believe in, your business ! It can even be fun! You don’t have to pay to join a networking association, there’s lots of events you can go to for free and just meet and talk to people - people who could become your customers…

So make a point of starting conversations with people, if you have an engaging manner people will be fascinated to learn about your business and even about you and your story.

Have a business card to hand, and pass them out, it helps if you have a fun and colourful card, with your USP clearly printed on the back, people always study business cards as lets face it, we consider it rather rude not to….

So if you’re standing in line at the local coffee shop waiting for your daily fill of wake up juice, and you get into conversation with the lady in front, pass her your card… and if it says on the back of it something like…

“solving your gift buying problems” or “we source the tastiest treats” or ” all the new seasons fashion styles” do you think that might elicit a question or two… It would certainly spark my interest !

Starting conversations is good fun, it broadens your horizons - you never know who you’re going to meet and it might end up being profitable for you ?

Worst case scenario it’ll pass the time in the coffee queue line… best case you’ll make an interesting new acquaintance and who knows where that could lead ?

How to get people talking about your business…

Visibility creates credibility !

Visibility creates credibility !

When there’s budget cuts, marketing and PR can seem like a frivolous option compared to rent and rates, but really if you’re not marketing your business and continually re-inforcing your message you run the risk of lessening your brand.

Note that I’m not talking here exclusively about advertising, rather a mix of advertising and other PR activities that don’t need to cost the earth.

Building a strong brand isn’t an activity reserved for the big brands in this world any longer, small businesses can really see a return on investment for a bit of brand building.

How can you market your business effectively?  There are two questions you need to ask yourself…

1. Who’s my target customer (don’t say everyone) break this down into different stratas or types if you can, it will make this process easier for you.

2. Identify your message – or your USP ?  What’s different about your store ?

There’s lots of ways to market your business, local press, local radio, direct mail to your customer database, through your website, local events, online marketing, sponsorship and any other profile lifting activity you can think of… including the new social media that’s so much in the news at the moment.

PR which is a fancy name for giving information to journalists who might be interested enough to print your story is pretty much free if you do it yourself.  Ok, so you may not get into Vogue, but with a few well thought out press releases you should be able to get into your local magazines and newspaper.

PR really consists of building a strong relationship with local journalists so that when you have a story to tell you can get some good local coverage, you can build a relationship by being reliable, interesting and timely with your news.

Free editorial coverage is your goal here, and the old maxim visibility creates credibility should make this an activity worth considering…

If you’re not sure where to start, download our free e-book – a crash course in PR from the e-book section & the sample press release template from the downloads section to help you on your way.

PR has a reputation as one of those “black art” ideas, rather like web design, search engine optimisation or garages for women drivers, but once you know how it works it can be a real advantage in getting some great press coverage for your business

Remember : Visibility creates credibility !

Blogs, blogging and new social media !

blog-printers-block
This post is inspired by the recent seminar i gave at Pulse, where i asked the audience of about 60 people whether they had a blog - while about 40% had a website only one person was blogging….

Blogging is comparatively new in the UK, but its a good idea to understand what it is, so you can make an informed decision about whether or not it will work for your business.

First up, lets start with a definition of what a blog is, so there’s no confusion:

A blog is a derivative of the term web - log. Its normally run by one person but it can be run by several with contributions by interested parties. Its updated regularly and can feature graphics or video, as well as quizzes, questions and comments. It runs in reverse order with the most recent articles or posts as they’re known coming at the top of the blog.

Many blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject; others are used more as online personal diaries. There’s many different kinds of blogs, personal ones, corporate ones, question answering ones and genre blogs to name a few.

Since blogs are posted online, they’re arguably interconnected and this interconnectivity is called the blogosphere. It now has its own rules, communities and search engines. There are also micro blog sites such as Twitter which only allow users to post messages of 140 characters at a time.

So, what’s all the fuss about, what’s the importance of blogging?

Well, blogging gives people and in our case businesses a voice, they’re invaluable for interacting with customers and engaging with and attracting potential new customers. As you control the information you put out you can promote your business as you wish it to be promoted and gain search engine ranking (as content rich sites rise up through search engine rankings)

So should your Business be Blogging?

The answer is pretty much - YES! Whatever product or services your business provides you should be blogging now. Unless you hate writing or have nothing of interest to say. Blogging is basically free, the only cost is your time, but sadly, most businesses are still not taking advantage of this simple, easy and inexpensive way to promote their business.

These are the top five reasons why you should be blogging:

1. Blogging creates authority: If you put out good content, then you can brand yourself as an expert in your field. Experts are trusted, which can only reflect well in your sales.

2. Interaction with customers: Your customers can read your posts and comment on them, getting into dialogue with your customers builds relationships, and strong relationships are at the base of sound businesses.

3. Keywords: Blogging allows you to add keyword dense content to your site – this will attract customers searching for your keywords online.

4. Branding your business is in your hands: You can present yourself as witty, personable, humble, expert, intelligent, however you see fit – blogs are a great way for your customers and prospects to see the people behind the business who are often hidden behind walls of minders …

5. Content – adding new content to your site regularly will bring in a steady stream of new prospects or customers, its also a reason for existing customers to check back, to see what’s new… Its one of the mysteries of the human brain – none of us like to miss something we think we should know about.

The most used excuses for not blogging are lack of knowledge or time.

So for a quick knowledge burst head over to blogger to sign up for a free blog site that you can customise with your own template.

As for time, if you’re already issuing press releases, or writing a newsletter then this shouldn’t be a giant leap for you… Just re-write the piece for your blog and post it online.

There’s also a host of free resources on line about almost any kind of industry you can imagine, so if you read things that are interesting to you, and you think they’d be interesting to your readers too, then you can share them…

Don’t be put off, it sounds much more complicated than it actually is – Have a go, in the words of a famous sports brand – just do it !

You’ll be surprised, you might even enjoy it !

What is learning …?

Friday, June 5th, 2009

What is learning...?

What is learning...?

For most of us it’s a past thing, not an everyday thing. Its something we did at some time to get where we are now, but its not something we’re actively pursuing right now.

The dictionary definition of learning breaks it down into two distinct types, and maybe this is where the ambiguity starts…?
1. The act, process, or experience of gaining knowledge or skill (through schooling or study)
2. Behavioral modification especially through experience or conditioning.
(psychology )

As adults unless we are preparing for an exam or facing some momentous situation in our lives many of us are content to put the books aside in a cavalier, “I’m a grown up” kinda attitude.

So much of what passes for thinking in our everyday lives is really just critical thought that doesn’t help us and doesn’t help those around us. It comes from an attitude of scarcity rather than abundance, and its not empowering to ourselves or our businesses.

So, how about a more hands on approach to learning – Instead of thinking I’m done with learning, what if we asked instead…

* What can I learn today (that can help me or improve my business) ?
* How can I improve myself
* How can I help others ?

Running a business is like climbing steps, you can’t jump too many steps, because at each level you have to learn whatever it is you need to know to be able to climb that next step…. Whether its accounts, staff motivation or a lesson in bookkeeping….

So, rather than thinking of learning as a past thing, lets think of it as a present and future thing, what can we learn today that’s going to help us

After all it is the weekend !

Come on lets shake a tail feather…!

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

Let me see you shake a tail feather...

Let me see you shake a tail feather...

The definition of insanity, as someone much smarter than me once pointed out, is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result !

From a retail point of view, having just been at Pulse, I’d say its not just adding a few new lines to your shop (although that can’t hurt ) its looking at your business differently.

What do you offer? Is it gift solutions, fashion advice, seasonal inspiration, what’s the message behind your storefront?

Is everyone clear what you offer, or have you all been doing it so long its kinda got lost in the ether…? Sometimes a quick refresher course is all it takes to recover the sparkle.

Sometimes you’ve got to act like the peacock to attract the customers…. The peacock displays his feathers to attract attention, but independent retailers seem to like to keep a low profile. A low profile isn’t really an asset (unless you’re a troubled pop star)

Visibility = credibility !

The benefits of some good local pr will astound you….

* Send some press releases into your local publications (details of how to do this are on the e-book – crash course in PR)

* Paint your shop front – really jazz it up

* Invest in some new shop fittings

* Have an open/preview evening and invite along the local press for a photo opportunity

* Start a club

* Update your monthly newsletter

There’s a gazillion things you can do to re-ignite your interest in your business, and show off your feathers and preen a bit, after all it works for peacocks.

So why shouldn’t a little harmless self promotion work for your business ?
