the A to Z of retail

the A to Z of retail

The face of retail has changed so much over the past few years. So I’ve come up with my own A to Z for successful independent retailing.

A is for Advertising: Whether you consider it an enhanced form of communication or merely manipulation, most of us consider it necessary for our businesses. In fact, I could write a whole article just on advertising come to think of it…

B is for Budgets: I’m on safer ground here. If you don’t have a budget then you might get a nasty shock. This happens when you haven’t done your sums right, and it turns out that all your profit is tied up in your stock room !

C is for Credit: Be nice to your suppliers and you can negotiate favourable credit terms.

D is for Define your niche: Ok, so I’ve pulled that one a bit, but if you don’t define your niche you can end up chasing any opportunity that presents itself, which often results in a mismatch of styles, stock and confused customers.
E is for Employees: Sooner or later you’re going to have some. Start off with contracts and write everything down – this will save you a lot of heartache.

F is for fashion: Also known as trends. It is the cyclical law of nature that as things go up, they come down. Fashion reinvents itself each and every season. While giftware doesn’t follow quite so rapidly, it can still become obsolete, so read magazines, visit tradeshows and generally do anything else that can keep you up to date with what’s going on in your market.

G is for Gift Vouchers: A fabulous way for happy customers to let family and friends know what they’d like from your store.

H is for Happy face: There’s nothing worse than a miserable face behind the counter. Be pleasant and make sure that your staff are. Why not employ a mystery shopper to independently grade your service. Remember that most people leave a business because they just don’t feel valued or recognised.

I is for Infectious enthusiasm: Yours specifically ! To lead a team you must be enthusiastic. If you have no team and its just you and the customers then you still need to be enthusiastic (see previous letter)

J is for Just looking: You’re going to hear that a lot ! Rather than asking the age old dumb question – “Do you need any help?” Perhaps you could instead ask a better question – such as, for example – Have you seen our new collection of X….? At the very least you won’t get the just looking answer.

K is for keyword search: In our technological age, make sure your store comes up under your chosen keywords.

L is for Loss prevention: People will try to steal from you – Don’t make it easy. Look for blind spots and instill good security habits as a key part of your staff training.

M is for Marketing : Marketing is anything and everything you do to promote your business.

N is for Newsletter: A great tool for communicating with your customers, reminding them that you’re still there, that you have new stock in and putting a more human face on your business.

O is for Operations Manual: You’ll definitely need one of these as soon as you have your first employee, you’ll notice that they don’t do things like you do…! That’s why you need the operations manual – it says how things should be done, in which order, when and by who.

P is for Price: The all important question, how much to charge? My tuppence worth is that someone will always undercut you, so unless you are a pound shop, it’s worth defining other areas as the USP for your business – service, stock, knowledge, design for example.

Q is for Quest: Q is a hard one ! I chose Quest because I see it as a positive word, a go getting word. Quest implies striving, searching and constant improvement.

R is for Relationships: With your suppliers, your staff, the local council, the local media, and the wine bottle when its not going so good ! Invest some time and make them as good as possible (with the exception of the wine bottle!)

S is for Sales: Selling is a combination of art and science. Time invested in studying the psychology of selling is never wasted. Remember to sell benefits, not products, and always answer the oldest question “What’s in it for me?”

T is for Technology: You can’t avoid it. So you might as well take a few courses and work out what tasks you need technology to do for you.

U is for Uniform: Are you going to have one or are you confident that everyone else shares your good taste and style ?

V is for vision: Think about it, articulate it, print it and make a bit deal about it !

X is for Xtra: Ok, I stretched that one a bit. But every self employed person I know does more than a bit extra. Extra hours, extra jobs, extra learning, extra training. you get the idea.

Y is for You: the one that generates the vision, the standards and delivers on it !

Z is for Zero Tolerance: To anything that falls below standard, it’s so easy to slide as standards slip imperceptibly, but standards are what set businesses apart

Adriaaaaaaaaaaaaan ……!

Don't give up....

Don't give up....

I love Rocky Balboa ! I admit it.

Not the last movies but the earliest ones, where he’s young and hungry and the iconic moment when he shouts Adriaaaaaaan ! Ah, iconic cinema moments (and I’m a girl !)

So what do I love about Rocky? Simple, he doesn’t give up – He’s a survivor, and he keeps pushing through when all the odds are against him, but he’s totally determined and victory is sweeter because everything was against him !

Is there a bigger icon of triumph over adversity ?  I don’t think so !

So many times in life we get kicked in the bum and its hard to pick ourselves up time after time and remember what we started the damn business for in the first place…..?

To be our own bosses ….

To sell beautiful things we love ….

To set our own hours ….

To create something ….

Whatever your reason was, come Monday mornings it’s sometimes hard to hold onto the dream, so this is for everyone that doesn’t give in, that keeps pushing, learning new stuff when they feel a hundred years old, sorting out staff dilemmas and schedules, finding new suppliers, creating new displays and generally motivating everyone around them and keeping the spark alive.

Lets celebrate that we’re all still here !

Its enough of a reason, we don’t need fireworks and a band, lets just acknowledge that we’re fighters (maybe not as fierce as Rocky) but with the same determination !

Admit it now, how many of you have got “eye of the tiger” on your gym i-pod mix… I thought so !

In case you’re in need of a little pick me up this Monday morning… here’s the words to Eye of the Tiger to get you in the mood for a totally kicking week !

Risin’ up, back on the street
Did my time, took my chances
Went the distance, now I’m back on my feet
Just a man and his will to survive

So many times, it happens too fast
You change your passion for glory
Don’t lose your grip on the dreams of the past
You must fight just to keep them alive

It’s the eye of the tiger, it’s the cream of the fight
Risin’ up to the challenge of our rival
And the last known survivor stalks his prey in the night
And he’s watchin’ us all in the eye of the tiger

Survivor, Eye of the Tiger

Happiness is a buffet dinner…!

Happiness is a buffet dinner...!

Happiness is a buffet dinner...!

Happiness is a fleeting and inexact thing, but we all know when we have it, or when we feel it, even if its hard to put into words. But what is happiness and why are we talking about it in a business blog?

Achieving your own happiness is the best measure of how well you are living your life and enjoying your relationships. You can learn how to be happier and more fulfilled in everything you do and the end result of this is that everything around you will work more smoothly. It all begins and ends with us !

We’re all different…

Happiness in life is rather like a buffet at a really good hotel. If 100 people went up to the buffet and chose the food they wanted to eat in the quantity and mix that they felt would be most pleasing to them, then every plate would be different. A husband and wife going up to the buffet would each come back with plates that looked completely different. Happiness is the same.

Each of us needs a particular combination of ingredients to feel the very best that we can about ourselves.

Continuing with my buffet analogy, consider that each meal time when you visit it you’ll be selecting different food, or maybe you’ll be the person who has the same meal day in and day out without getting bored of it? But if you do try different food, then you’ll see that what you want changes by the meal, if not by the day….. so in the same vein, what we want to make us happy can change daily……

So why are we having a discourse on happiness in a business blog? Its because we’re all human beings and its all inter-related. We don’t act as automatons and if we are at least vaguely aware of what makes us happy then we have more chance of keeping ourselves on track instead of wondering off into the ether and making decisions that are not going to ultimately make us happy…

Sometimes its deciding to be bigger, open a new shop, take on more staff, and sometimes its deciding to be smaller or take on a new project, its completely individual and it changes – so we need to have some kind of a plan to make sure we’re in tune with ourselves and not just in a mad rat race that we don’t really want to win anyway….

What’s on your plate right now ?

Being overwhelmed is over-rated !

Overwhelmed is over-rated !

Overwhelmed is over-rated !

In our mad crazy world there’s a certain kudos in being stressed or overwhelmed by what you have to do. Its like a battle cry as we try to out stress each other by what’s on our to do list…

But being overwhelmed and stressed is over-rated – put plainly its just not good for you ! Ladies its aging, and guys – well, yes its aging for you too, but guys generally age better so lets not dwell on that little mystery.

When you start to feel stressed its because you’ve started to think that you’re going to fail ! Pure and simple – somewhere in your head you’ve started to think that you’re not going to make it, you can’t get it all done, and that’s causing you stress and flooding your body with adrenaline – which is soooooo not good for you it’d take a separate blog post to thrash that one out !

So what can you do?

Here’s three possible actions you can take…

1. Break it down

Question : how do you eat an elephant?
Answer : bite by bite

Break whatever you’re trying to do down into small manageable steps, so you can feel that you’re moving closer to your goal and achieving something.

2. Give yourself more time:

Can you re-negotiate a deadline, you’ll do much better with this if you’re not consistently doing this… but its worth asking…. At least you’ll be able to separate out your to do list into immediate, urgent and needs to be done, but not necessarily today

3. Discuss it, diarise it, delegate it, or delete it…!

Discussing things can be really helpful when you’re not thinking so clearly – just make sure you’re picking someone smart to discuss it with – someone who can sound it out and pick their way through the threads of what you’re saying

Diarise it – if it doesn’t have to be done today – then diarise it, and forget about it, concentrating on what absolutely has to be done today. I know its not ideal, but sometimes you’ve just got to let go of perfection and accept that there was only one superman, and you’re not him !

Delegate it – get some help, enrol people in helping you…. Explain what needs to be done and why and get everyone involved. A problem shared is a problem halved.

Delete it – oooh, harsh I know – but is it going to make any difference to your life….? Really ? if it’s not, and it’s a pile of stuff that you’ve been meaning to read for weeks, that’s blocking up your desk – just admit that you’re not going to do it, sweep it into the bin, and see if the world doesn’t begin on time the next day – it will I can promise you.

If you’re really stressing over something, a deadline, or a customer, or a call you have to make, then the best thing to do, is to change your state – if you’re sitting, then stand, if you’re standing then lie down, if you’re at a desk, then go for a walk round the block.

Get your body moving – for some reason it helps, go outside, look at the sky and see how big it is and how small we are, and how much it really really really doesn’t matter.

Deep breaths everyone !

What does success look like or feel like…?

What does success look like or feel like?

What does success look like or feel like?

A quick whizz round all of us has revealed that we all have very different views of what success is…? For some success is a fast car, a hot girl and a lot of money. For others its achieving a goal and creating something, while for others its time for bubble baths !

Even more illuminating are the answers to the question “Are you successful ?” or “Do you consider yourself to be successful ?”

People answer this question from an entirely subjective viewpoint, whether they actually feel that they are successful, this is irrespective of their financial, emotional or work situation, and the answers are surprising !

I asked a good friend of mine this question “Do you think you are successful ? ” His answer was a resounding YES ! Not a seconds hesitation, clear and precise.

I asked him what did he judge it upon to be able to answer so immediately a question that has me pondering the answer ?

His reply - ” I keep trying ! ”

It blew me away !

If this was my criteria for success, then i’d definately be a raging success !

But its not my criteria !

Upon reflection, my criteria are all about how in control of things i am, this can be anything from business to relationships, gardening to laundry.

Obviously the times i can actually be in control of those things are few and far between. To add a bit of spice to it, for myself and make it a bit more difficult, i also see a successful person as someone who’s never flustered and has a fully functioning filofax with neat writing in it !

Yes, feel free to laugh any time you like ! My standards are clearly ridiculous - but i didn’t know that until i actually realised i had some standards.

So, my question to you today is : ” Are you successful ?” and how are you judging your decision?

The answers to the question just might give you some food for thought …!
